Spinal Decompression for Sciatica Treatment

Written By Longview Chiropractic Center on October 25, 2018

It’s been estimated that about 10% of the people who present with low back pain have sciatica.

And, in 90% of people with sciatica, the condition is caused by a herniated disc with root compression of the nerve.

The symptoms of sciatica can go beyond back pain to include:

  • Pain radiating down either — or both — legs
  • Pain radiating to feet or toes
  • Numbness of legs or feet
  • Pain upon raising one’s legs

These symptoms can range in intensity from annoying to excruciating, depending on the spinal involvement.

A Non-invasive Sciatica Treatment

Thankfully, many people can find relief from their sciatica pain without having to resort to dangerous prescription medication or surgeries.

Chiropractic manipulation is a gentle, safe, and effective way of returning the structures of the spine to their proper places for optimal functioning.

But for those patients that need a more intensive treatment, there’s spinal decompression.

Spinal decompression applies traction to a patient’s spine to encourage negative intradiscal pressure allowing the for the proper positioning of the herniated disc.

This lowered disc pressure also assists in bringing a supply of nutrients to the injured disc to encourage healing.

Since 90% of sciatica is caused by a compressed nerve, decompressing the structures of the spine will take the pressure off the nerve and help reduce the associated inflammation and irritation.

The procedure is accomplished through the use of a traction table, in which the top is fixed and the bottom movable.

The patient’s pelvic girdle is maintained in a special harness and the table is lowered and raised to gently stretch the discs of the spine.
